Know How To Deal With Cataract

There is a natural lens inside our eyes. These lenses are responsible for the refraction of light rays that enter our eyes, so we can see. When a cataract arises, lens becomes cloudy, disrupting vision or causing vision loss. When cataracts first appear, things look less colorful and blurry. As they progress, eye sight may be completely diminished.
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Blurry or dim vision
  • Double images
  • Night vision trouble
  • Fading of colors
  • Need for brighter light for reading
  • Frequent changes in eyeglass prescriptions

Treating Cataracts

Cataract can only be treated through surgery. Surgery is performed with just a small incision with no stitches. Surgery is done to improve your vision.

During surgery, the cloudy lens is removed completely and replaced by a new intraocular lens implant (IOL). There are few limitations recommended after the surgery. Within just a few days, you are able to get back to normal activities.

In some cases, cataracts may not need to be treated. There are no medications to treat or to prevent cataracts.

How Long Does It Take to Recover From Cataract Surgery?

The recovery time from cataract surgery is usually fairly quick. There are, however, a number of things that can impact how quickly you recover, depending on your currently physical health and how you take care of yourself immediately following surgery. If you’re going to be undergoing cataract surgery in Boynton Beach, here is what you can expect immediately following surgery and beyond.

After Cataract Surgery

This is an outpatient procedure that uses local anesthetic to keep you from feeling any pain. As soon as the surgery is completed there will be a shield that will be placed over your eye. This shield is used to protect your eye from being accidentally rubbed or irritated in any way. The shield is lightweight and while it may be a bit strange to get used to, most patients find that they can ignore it after a short time.

Once the shield is placed and the procedure is complete you will be moved to a recovery area. This will allow you to rest and to recover from the sedation. The process usually takes around 30 minutes or so. During this time the doctor or staff will be there to discuss your recover and to set up your follow-up appointment.

It’s important to note that you will not be allowed to drive immediately after your surgery, so it’s vital to have something there to drive you home. You will be given a pair of sunglasses that will help to shield your eyes during your transport home. Once you’re at home you can remove the shield if you wish but it’s recommended that you wear it while sleeping, at least for a number of days. It’s recommended that you relax for the first few hours after going home and avoid television or digital screens.

You will be given a prescription for eye drops that will help to prevent infection. You may feel a little bit of discomfort, such as a gritty sensation, immediately after the surgery but this should go away fairly quickly and is nothing to be alarmed about.
